Composer

Jonathan Gregory studied composition with John Rutter when he was in Cambridge, but he learnt the art of composition throughout his musical training in Cathedrals and churches, at Royal Academy of music and Cambridge University, as well as on hand for services, as there were always needs to improvise the instrument before, during and after the services. He has also enjoyed writing liturgical setting and mixed voice choirs, some of which have been published and used at services.

His composition has become a part of the concert sung by the UK-Japan Choir and soloists, and when he improvised the horror of 2011 tsunami disaster in Tohoku region in Japan on the organ at the start of Christmas Concert that year, it was so powerful and yet moving, large number of the audience cried, including the Japanese dignitaries.

He composed for the poem written by Ms Junko Ochi, a diplomat who supported the founding of the Music Society 30 yrs ago, to mark 30 years of friendship through music for the UK-Japan Music Society, which was premiered at the Embassy of Japan at the Spring Concert in March 2023.
